Letter 99

Dear you,

The days seem hotter

Than any summer before

The air thick with anticipation

You brought your three bikes

To the place I sleep these days

But you showed up without the yellow jewel

I led the way this time

Through my old neighborhood

That I never rode my bike through

I could hear your laugh around every turn

We weren’t lost

I knew where we were

But I could not find the park to save my life

You five followed anyway

I found the park

And we found shade

Their summer sweat

And flushed cheeks

Heavy on the grass

We winged it

Like we always do

We ran and swung around the metal pole

We skipped back toward their

Exposed teeth faces

Smiling

Instead of the yellow jewel

You found a bath toy in the sand

And with that little tugboat in hand

You asked me to be your girlfriend again

The kids laughed and cheered

And we cried

We aren’t lost

We know right where we are.

Love, Me
